My thoughts on the premiere…

* LOVED seeing familiar faces from Xena and HTLJ (items in quotes are Xena episodes):
Chase (Jay Laga’aia – Draco)
Chase’s wife (Jennifer Rucker – Miss Parnassus, “Here She Comes, Miss Amphipolis”)
George Cypher (Jeffrey Thomas – Jason from HTLJ)
Michael Cypher (David de Lautour – Icus, “Altared States”)
Darken Rahl (Craig Parker – Bellerophon, “To Helicon and Back”)
Ranssyn Fane (Andrew Robertt – Hippocrates, “Is There a Doctor in the House?”)

I honestly did try to watch as if I were a raw newbie coming to the story for the first time. I didn’t succeed completely, but I tried.

I think my biggest issue with the show itself was in the char development. Yes I realize that this is the first ep(s) and they had to set up the story. But I found myself wondering that if I hadn’t read WFR and consequently fell in love with the chars thru the books, would I have found myself caring about the chars in these first two eps? And I can’t say I would have.

Trying to look at it with a newbie eye, I found the chars of Richard and Kahlan written somewhat two-dimensionally. I wanted to know what was going on inside, and I wanted more backstory.

Also, and this may be my Xena fandom showing through, I felt there were way too many Kahlan close-ups of her looking wistfully at Richard (in the 2nd part). I wished for more steel in her personality, not doe-eye gaga-ness that was showing up.

Did I like the show? Unequivocally yes!

I’m waiting for a few more eps and hoping for some character fleshing-out before I decide if I love it. :)

If you think that was entertaing or “good” you are a gold plated dumb ass. Lord of The Rings 90-95% like the book. Harry Potter 1st movie 95% like the book. Dune (the sci-fi channel version)90-95% like the book. Some directors have learned that making a show or movie very close to the original book is a winning formula. A TV show doesn’t have to be just like the book, but hey, is even similar to the books, other than the character names too much to ask?! I guess so. Can’t wait until it is canceled.

Legend of the Seeker, 20-25% like the book. this was platinum plated crap.

  2. Tell us how you really feel, knarfster!

Hmm…I’m a “gold-plated dumb ass” for enjoying this “platinum plated crap”.

Then don’t watch. Take your hate elsewhere, it’s not welcome here. A rational critique would have been…your irrational venom is not.

I knew from the beginning this wasn’t going to be a 100% true adaptation of the books. If you thought it was going to be, then you don’t understand the industry, and you were fooling yourself. I’m going to enjoy it for what it is – entertainment.
