My thoughts on “Reckoning” (SPOILERS – if you haven’t watched it yet)

I just finished watching the ep, and I gotta say, until the very end and the fadeout, I kept expecting a cutaway scene to Rahl in the underworld, plotting with the forces there for his return. We can hope. The whole “other evil forces will rise to fill the void” thing….lame. (although I understand the need for the plot device)

I’ve been reading reviews here and there, and there seem to be some who got pretty torqued that Nicholas was blond when his parents are both dark-haired. Frankly, IMHO, that isn’t worth getting worked up about…My husband has very dark brown hair now (almost black), and so did his parents, but he was “wheat blond” until 11 or 12. Puberty’s good for more than growing gonads. ;-)

My thoughts:

* Bridget = Awesomesauce as Kahlan. Dang that girl can act. LOVED her in the red cossies. Those were amazing! I want!

* Craig P = Did a great job of creeping me out as the “doting” husband. Calling Kahlan “my love”…./shudder

* Cara = Liked her. Mord-Sith with some brains, not just a mindless follower. Hoping we’ll see her again.

* Craig H = Honestly, I expected more deep angst out of Richard throughout the time he was in the future. I didn’t feel it.

Overall, I liked the ep, but the ending was just SAD/LAME/WEAK. Could stand as a finale if the show isn’t renewed, yet also left things open enough to have them continue on if it is.

What do y’all think?

  1. I think it’s silly to bother about Master Nicholas’ hair color as well, color can change with time and I thought it unconciously led me to think he would be good – which made the “finger” scene that much more shocking!!

I actually liked the way the episode ended (and I think that it was resolved that way in case the show wasn’t renewed – I’ve read that it has been now) and it does still leave lots of opportunities for season 2. They aren’t sticking exactly to the books, but I think they are doing a fantastic job – this was only season 1!! I’ve been impressed (then again, this IS Sam Raimi, et al)!!!

p.s. Additional applause to Bridget Regan – that girl can seriously perform. Any emotion, any action, any situation, she captures it entirely! I’m enthralled! Can’t wait to see more of her next year (and hopefully a new outfit or two)!!

  2. Lol. Just have to say that here in Australia “cozzies” is another word for swimmers, so I spent a few moments wondering how on earth I missed Kahlan IN SWIMWEAR *lollercoasters!*

Ending was a bit weak, would’ve liked to see Rahl perish a little more personally with some slice’n'dice from Richard (I mean isn’t the Sword of Truth meant to be his magical aid in kicking the ass of villainary?), but I’m so glad we didn’t get cliffhangered. PHEW!

  3. I am speechless when it comes to bridget. Craig there a little too much nice in him.craig h. needs to be more strong in his character.cara I really couldn’t wish for anyone better(that scene when they were eating the frum was funny) and hope to see her in season 2. Overall it was awesome except for the ending I mean seriously! Anyway its going to be hard without LOTS but I am going to watch the episodes all over again especially the finale and probably read the books again PLEASE keep us updated about any news you have about lots or anything related:)

  4. standing ovation for bridget she really has a bright future ahead of her.

  5. I liked how the final episode was handled overall. Obviously it differs from the book but that’s nothing new, and in the big-picture sense, nearly all options are still on the table for Rahl’s further troublemaking, Cara’s alignment, Richard’s changing role in the Midlands and, of course, The Relationship.

It’s unfortunate that corporate decisions about renewal are so convoluted, requiring a season conclusion that could allow the first year to stand alone. On the other hand, I thought the script struck a strong balance between closing and furtherance.

Bridget’s range as an actress received more room for expression in this episode than most of the others and she did very well. I also thought The Seeker’s problem-solution processing was better expressed here than earlier in the season. Craig Parker did some nice subtle things that require close watching (at least on my little screen!) and Craig Horner is getting beyond the boyish part of Richard and beginning to suggest a realization of wider responsibilities. Bruce Spence has been great. The Evil Offspring is one of the most horrid children ever–nice debut by the kid, very well done.

I am anxiously awaiting confirmation of season 2 renewal and very hopeful about where things will go. From my conversations, it also appears that quite a few people are planning to pick up the show in its summer reruns from Episode One; word of mouth is generating a whole new wave of interest.

  6. I actually LOVED this season ender. It’s one of the best I’ve ever seen. I highly doubt we’ve seen the last of Darken Rahl.

Bridget – ROCKED this eps, HARD! OMG! And the cozzies!!! I wants them all! ;)

Craig H – I still think he needs to work more on his acting but he did step it up a LOT in this eps. Good on him!

Craig P – OMG so creepy! I LOVE it.

Cara actress – Knowing nothing of the Book!Cara, this chick totally rocked and I can’t wait to see more of her! :D

Nicholas (the kid) – Whoa…evil little snot!

“The Master” – whoa, evil looking like Uncle Fester big snot. Glad he’s gone (for now…). LOL
